Nintendo's forthcoming 3DS sequel to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Pastmay be one of the smoothest-running game to ever grace the handheld – at least as far as its performance in 3D mode is concerned – due to its ability to run at 60 frames-per-second with 3D switched on, Zelda series veteran Eiji Aonuma told EDGE.
"The game runs at 60fps, while all the 3D games up till now have run at 30fps," Aonuma said. "The faster the framerate, the more stable the 3D effect, so 60fps is a big deal." Aonuma also mentioned that the game will not take advantage of the 3DS' gyroscopic capabilities, as requiring the player to tilt the 3DS could break the screen's required viewing angle.

Uniqlo’s range of Monster Hunter t-shirts.
While the rest of the gaming world looks ahead to E3 and frets over the latest Draconian missives from Microsoft, in Japan Capcom’s Monster Hunter 4 campaign went into overdrive this week – over three months ahead of the 3DS game’s release. And it’s no wonder, as the Japan success of the latest entry in Capcom’s killer franchise may not be assured as you’d think.Monster Hunter 4′s September 14 release date was announced during a Japan-only edition of Nintendo Direct last Friday that focused solely on Capcom’s two upcoming tentpole 3DS releases, MH4 and Ace Attorney 5. Series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto also revealed a 5,990 yen (Ł40) price tag, a pair of Monster Hunter-themed 3DS XL handsets and, well, not a lot else, instead teasing that more information would come out of an event Capcom was to hold at Odaiba Aqua City in Tokyo over last weekend.

Nintendo has released this week's list of new digital content for the American eShop stores on Wii U and 3DS.
The digital version of Animal Crossing: New Leaf is this week's headliner. In our Animal Crossing: New Leaf review we said the game is "an essential purchase for 3DS owners needing to unwind" and "a game you'll always make sure to have on you".You can check out the Animal Crossing: New Leaf launch trailer through here.
Here's this week's full official list:
Virtual Console on Wii U
Yoshi - Originally released on the Game Boy system in 1992, Yoshi is an action/puzzle game starring Mario and Yoshi. Yoshi has been trapped in an egg, and it's up to Mario to save his friend, while also stopping an airborne invasion of enemies. As the Goombas, Bloopers and Boo Buddies fall from the sky, Mario must catch them on trays and stack pairs of two of a kind before the piles get too high. Match multiple pairs, raise your score and help Yoshi escape. Available to download on June 12, Yoshi is the sixth game released on the Virtual Console for the Wii U system to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Famicom. For a limited time, the game will be available for only 30 cents.
Spelunker - Spelunker is the weakest action hero in the history of video games whose colossal spirit for adventure is countered only by his miniscule threshold for pain. Wander through miles of uncharted caves in search of the legendary underground pyramid and its vast treasures. But beware of the scalding steam vents, poisonous bats and the avenging spirits of dead spelunkers that lurk in every corner of this massive underground labyrinth.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf - As mayor of your own town, you make the decisions that shape your town and your life. In the Animal Crossing: New Leaf game, experience a living, breathing world where new friends and new discoveries await every day - morning, noon and night. Eiji Aonuma has confirmed that his A Link To The Past sequel will include a Dark World, runs at 60 frames per second and is set to reveal “a big surprise” in its opening moments that will shock Zelda fans.Speaking in our latest issue, the Zelda series chief also revealed that the forthcoming 3DS adventure will bring back characters from the original SNES title, and that it won’t force 3D effects or gyro controls onto the player.“This new title will feature lots of things that are new to the series; right at the start of the game, there’s a big surprise that will shock players,” he told us. “We started out with the new play mechanics, such as Link being able to become a painting and walk along the walls, and then figured out from there how to build a story around them. Rather than forcing elements of the original story into this one, we’ve instead focused on bringing back the characters, so you can see what happened to them after the events of the first game.”An alternative dark world, a key feature of the original game, will also be an important part of the sequel, Aonuma confirmed. “Part of what made A Link To The Past interesting was the way you could move between the Light World and the Dark World and solve puzzles, and we’re planning to bring that back in A Link To The Past 2 for sure,” he told us. “Link’s ability to become a painting will be related to that.”Gyro control won’t be part of the new game as moving the 3DS destabilises the 3D effect, said Aonuma. “But the game runs at 60fps, while all the 3D games up till now have run at 30fps,” he added. “The faster the framerate, the more stable the 3D effect, so 60fps is a big deal. He added that the game will be entirely playable in 2D, however.Elsewhere in our interview, Aonuma expressed the desire to make different games, having spent the last fifteen years developing Zelda titles. “I’m 50 now, so I only have about ten more years to make games at Nintendo. I want to try all sorts of new things before it’s too late – I don’t want to get to the end of my career and only have worked on Zelda. But every time I come up with some good new ideas, they end up being used in a Zelda game! I need a six-month break to get away from the Zelda cycle and focus on something new [laughs]. But I’d probably end up making a game that’s similar to Zelda; after all, A Link To The Past was my biggest influence.”You can read the full interview with Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma in E255. You can subscribe and buy individual issues now in print, on iPad, on Google Play and through Zinio.

Puzzle/platformer Mighty Switch Force! 2 - WayForward's first direct sequel in the Mighty series - will arrive later this month on the 3DS eShop. North America gets it next week on 13th June, while Europe has to wait an extra fortnight until 27th June.Back in February WayForward teased the sequel saying that protagonist Patricia Wagon would have a "surprise career change" and indeed she's transitioned from a cop to a firefighter. This time instead of busting the outlaw Hooligan Sisters, you're tasked with saving the reformed criminals. They're not the only lives you'll save, as you'll also have to search for "ugly secret babies" hidden throughout each level; for this apparently takes place in a grim society where people stash away their unwanted kin to die in fires. Don't let the perky voices and bright smiles fool you.Mighty Switch Force! 2 will feature new puzzle types, weapons, enemies, and tunes.

O2 is to offer free wi-fi access to 3DS and DS owners across the UK.
Owners of the handhelds will now see their machines automatically connect to internet hotspots that use O2’s service. These include McDonalds, Debenhams, Pizza Hut, Costa Coffee, House of Fraser, Toby Carvery, Bluewater and large parts of London boroughs Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea.
Connection will be automatic and not require authentication, although users will need to have their machines updated to the latest firmware.
The on-screen Nintendo Zone icon will blink when entering a compatible area.
“We’re always looking at ways to improve the user experience for Nintendo 3DS owners,” Nintendo’s UK marketing and PR director Shelly Pearce stated.
“This partnership with O2 means that gamers will now have access to all of the unique online features offered by Nintendo Zone in more locations than ever before.”
O2 wi-fi MD Gavin Franks added: “Nintendo is a leading brand in the gaming world and have shown real innovation in the industry, making them an ideal partner for O2 Wifi.
“With the popularity of online multiplayer gaming continuing to rise, customers are looking for a fast, free accessible Wi-Fi connection when they’re on the move – something that we know is becoming perceived as a right, rather than a privilege. This deal will enable Nintendo 3DS gamers to automatically connect their device to O2 Wifi whenever they are in over 7,000 hotspots across the UK’s top venues, restaurants and retailers.”

June 5th, 2013, 00:53 Posted By: wraggster
Konami’s latest football release won't be released on next-gen consoles this time around.
PES 2014 was announced just minutes ago but the publisher’s European PES community manager Adam Bhatti has already taken to Twitter to confirm that the game will definitely be Xbox 360, PS3 and PSP only this year.
“[We’re] not in the business for high-res next-gen ports. We can't and shouldn't do that. Bad habit etc,” he stated. “So the fact we're not on PS4/Xbone with PES 2014 is simple. We can't and shouldn't be just using higher quality textures etc should be new.
“In the past people accused us of being lazy. We're adamant of not making the same mistakes, and making sure we create amazing football games. It's hardly amazing making the next-gen version prettier. We shouldn't have that mentality, and you shouldn't expect that. Aim higher.
“I'm a gamer like you, can't wait for next-gen, so I feel your pain. But once you see PES 2014 in action, that pain will disappear. It's stunning.”
When pressed on the subject, Bhatti listed a number of additional reasons why the publisher didn’t feel a next-gen release was appropriate this year.
“I think it's important to remember our biggest markets, where we are number 1 (Latam/Asia) [sic] won't shift to next-gen as quick as Europe,” he added. “We can't just leave our most passion fans behind. Besides, the quality of the current version is high enough.
“There will be possibly 2m next-gen consoles available to buy this year. Majority will be US based. European market will have less than US = small market to sell to in general for a long time.
“We're Konami, not Ubisoft, EA etc. We don’t have deep pockets. We have built one new engine, we don't have the money or resources to build two unique engines. AC4 for example will be just prettier. You want that? How many people do you think will buy a next-gen console this year alone? Think about availability too.”
Bhatti also said that no 3DS release was planned as “no-one bought” PES 2013 on 3DS and that a Vita version is not planned because: “The install base isn't great. We're doing a PSP version because there's still demand for it. A very small team work on it. Very small.”
When pressed on the decision to skip PS4 and Xbox One when their arrival is just around the corner and whether that could damage PES 2014’s potential sales, Bhatti added: “There's always a concern, but you're overestimating the speed of uptake.”

Flipnote Studio 3D, Nintendo's free, three-dimensional animation software for the 3DS, will be available on the North American eShop sometime in "early August," according to the software's newly launched official English website.
As is the case with Flipnote Studio 3D's Japanese counterpart, users will be able to export their animations to one of two networks: Flipnote Gallery: Friends and/or Flipnote Gallery: World. Usage of the Friends network is free and allows the user to share their animations with their 3DS buddies, whereas the World network is a paid service accessed by a global community of users.
The subscription fee is $0.99 for 30 days of access. Additionally, the app comes with a free 30 trial period, and the World network is freely available every day between 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. local 3DS time. The user can also earn Coin Points and Collector Points by submitting and evaluating Flipnotes, which can lead to free months of playtime if they're awesome enough at either activity.

The eShop cup spilleth over this week, with lots of great new releases for Wii U and 3DS. The Legend of Zelda gets two links to the past in Oracle of Ages andOracle of Seasons. Both games are available for $4.99 each until June 20, and use a password system to interact with one another.
The 3DS also gets The Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves, and on June 4, you can snag a demo for Project X Zone, the bizarre Capcom/Sega/Namco mash-up RPG.
Meanwhile, the Wii U Virtual Console picks up Mega Man X and Ghosts N' Goblins (not to be confused with Super Ghouls N' Ghosts, which came out earlier this month). From now until June 6, purchasing one of these games will get you the other for half price.
Finally, there's a Just Dance 4 sale going on – you can pick up the game or select DLC for 30 percent off until June 4.

Australian Classification Board ratings for 3D Sonic the Hedgehog and 3D Altered Beast indicate Sega's line of 3DS re-releases may be headed west after all. The four games, also including 3D Space Harrier and 3D Super Hang-on, are all out in Japan already.
3D Space Harrier, rated by the ACB earlier this year, was playable at last weekend's MCM Expo in London. While there's nothing concrete yet, the evidence certainly points to the 3D line coming west, with 3D Space Harriermost likely to glide in first.
