Neimod and others over at 3dbrew.org are collecting donations for a decap of the custom Nintendo SoC (System-On-a-Chip) from a retail 3DS. The goal is to extract the boot code and other proprietary information. Quote: 'We have gotten a price quote from a professional lab on the deal (removal, decap, delayer, SEM imaging) and it came out to $400 per layer of the chip, which they estimate will come to about $2000 total. Plus the cost of the 3DS we will be donating for the hardware sample(s). The numbers of layers is approximate because they likely don't know how many layers are in the SoC until they actually decap it. In the worst case we estimate between 8 or 10 layers. For now we're trying to reach their initial quote of $2000 USD and send in the 3DS to get it started. Later on we can still decide to have the remaining layers imaged. You will have the noble honor of helping the 3DS community progress forward. We're also considering giving contributors a copy of the images produced as thanks.

Treasure, the renowned developer of Bangai-O, Sin and Punishment, andGunstar Heroes, is at work on a new action game for 3DS now, CEO Masato Maegawa revealed to UK magazine GamesTM. "We are making a new game on Nintendo 3DS now," he said. "Not multiplatform, but exclusive to 3DS."
Maegawa explained that the team is "keen" on working on the 3DS, despite the challenges of working in (both polygonal and stereoscopic) 3D. While you can design the same game in 3D or 2D, Maegawa said, "My preference is 2D. It's hard to preserve the quality of the game when you make it completely in 3D."

PSone classic Dragon Quest VII is getting remade and enhanced for 3DS next year.
Square Enix has confirmed as much via aJapanese teaser site, which dates the 3DS remake for release in Japan on February 7, 2013.ArtePiazza, who has previously worked on DS remakes of classic DQ games, is handling development on the 3DS title, renamed Dragon Quest VII: Warriors of Eden, according toSiliconera.
The much-praised Dragon Quest VII originally released on PSone in Japan in 2000, with a US launch the following year. The game unfortunately never made UK shores.
Square is yet to detail release plans outside of Japan, but with previous remakes getting international releases, its a safe bet to assume this won't stay Japan-only for long.

Nintendo is notorious for releasing awesome limited edition hardware abroad, but here in the US of A, we tend to get the short end of the joystick. Case in point, the house that Mario Miyamoto built is releasing a Charizard-themed 3DS XL on December 15th in Japan for Ą18,900 ($237). Available exclusively at Pokémon Center stores, aspiring buyers will need to complete an order form and win (yes, win) a drawing for a chance to purchase one of these beautiful monsters. Winners will have from December 15th through January 14th to claim and purchase their prize. As for you unlucky entrants, you'll have the opportunity to indulge in one of America's favorite pastimes -- buying Nintendo collectibles online at an extremely high markup.

Today's early Nintendo Direct broadcast didn't have much in the way of new hardware pricing orsurprises, but it did reveal a new music service for 3DS users in Japan. The handheld will soon be able to stream, download and play music from Recochoku, a mobile-centric site that specializes in ringtones and track downloads. Users should be able to take their pick from over 1 million titles, priced at around 250 yen. Any songs bought on your 3DS can also be transferred to your (compatible) keitai of choice.
