Fire Emblem Awakening shifted 180,000 units across its debut month at North American retail, Nintendo of America tells us. In a statement sent to Joystiq, the company said the tactical 3DS RPG enjoyed best ever first month sales in the franchise's nearly 23-year history. No doubt that was helped by a strong eShop uptake of 63,000 units, which comes in at 35 percent of total sales.
Considering the series' last entry, Shadow Dragon, sold just over 250,000 units in North America to date, Awakening's sales bump over here is impressive, much as we thought the game was in our review. We awarded Awakening four and a half stars, deeming it "the best soap opera since CBS canceled Guiding Light," which is certainly saying something.

Disney Infinity signs on in North America on August 18, with the international release in most regions set for August 20. Speaking to the New York Times, Disney Interactive co-president John Pleasants said the multiplatform game's two month delay from an initial June window was one of "opportunity" rather than necessity.
"We could deliver in June if we wanted to," Pleasants told the New York Times. "Will a two-month timing change help us? Sure, of course. It gives us a little more time to add bells and whistles and make sure it really sings and pops."
When approached, Disney Interactive provided us with the folllowing statement from Pleasants: "We have moved the launch date for Disney Infinity to August 18 to capitalize on the critical fall retail season."
A Disney Interactive spokesperson also told Joystiq the UK release date is August 23.
Disney Infinity, which incorporates physical Disney toy figures and spans many of the company's high profile properties, looks a powerful competitor to Activision's Skylanders series. While the New York Times reports Pleasants "downplayed comparisons" between the two franchises, he did say ofSkylanders Swap Force's fall release that "it's good to be first and really lean into the most important selling season of the year."

Poor American Pokémon trainers that have been eying up eBay listings and import sites can breathe a sigh of relief. Nintendo has announced that the special edition yellow 3DS XL -- emblazoned with Pikachu, no less -- will arrive in the States before the end of the month. Priced at $200 and packaged with a 4GB SD memory card, it'll arrive the same day as the latest Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game -- that's March 24th if you've got your pokédiary out. Walmart, Target, GameStop and Toys R S will all be stocking the handheld, although quantities are limited, so get your trucker cap, pokéballs and unerringly small backpack ready to brave those chains in a few weeks.

Nintendo of America has hinted at an upcoming US release of a special edition Nintendo 3DS XL featuring Pikachu.
Polygon reports the company has run out a handful of teases, included the one pictured, pointing to an upcoming launch for the bright yellow hardware.
Nintendo first teased the model in a recently premiered commercial for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, which arrives in North America on March 24th.
Further, a photo of a retail shipment of the 3DS XL in question has leaked, with rumour that it will arrive on the same day as the launch of Mystery Dungeon.
The Pikachu 3DS XL originally released in Japan in 2012, landing in Europe later in the year.

Nintendo of America has confirmed plans to offer more free download content to Fire Emblem Awakening owners "all the way through spring". Nintendo will continue to push free content to users via the system's always-on SpotPass feature. The first of this content arrived for US players today; a new map called 'A Hard Miracle' apparently "follows the story of Fire Emblem Awakening main character Chrom as he encounters a mysterious woman and sets off on a journey with her to rescue a group of kidnapped villagers".On March 28, Nintendo will release 'Ghost of Blade', "a haunted tale about a ghost and the ultimate sacrifice", followed by 'The Wellspring of Trust' on April 11 which will add "a map full of challenging enemies".'The Radiant Hero' will release on April 25, which is set "on an isolated island as Chrom and his allies search for a legendary hero".Nintendo says it will also offer additional free content in the form of "special weapons, additional playable characters and bonus challengers for the game's Double Duel multiplayer mode" in the coming weeks.

Nintendo's Flipnote Studio (aka Moving Memo Pad) brought shareable animated sketches to users when the wildly popular free app first launched for the DSi console many moons ago. Now, Nintendo's brought it up to date for Japanese 3DS users with Flipnote Studio 3D, supporting stereoscopic 3D images with three layers of depth along with six colors. As before, wannabe animators in that country will be able to share their artwork in AVI or GIF formats with friends on the 3DS network at no charge, or post to a larger audience on the Hatena World Flipnote Gallery for a fee. You can check the video after the break for more, but it would help to understand Japanese -- or be able to parse YouTube's inscrutabletranslation.

March 14th, 2013, 00:49 Posted By: wraggster
In 2011, former Sony employee Seijiro Tomita launched a suit against Nintendo, claiming the 3DS infringed on a patent he holds to display 3D visuals without glasses. Today, a federal court in New York decided to award Tomita with $30.2 million in damages for Iwata and Co.'s infringement. The house that Mario built unsuccessfully argued that it didn't rely on key parts of the patent, and that Tomita was just one of several folks it met with when it was looking into 3D tech in 2003. Nintendo's pockets are certainly deep enough to handle the sting, but we can't imagine it's a welcomed loss with sales forecasts taking dips.
